Project Brief

As part of the reconstruction of the entire Interstate 4 alignment, KCA designed approximately three miles in the section from 50th Street to the I-75 interchange. Design included construction plans for a six lane expressway with access roads and interchanges. The design updated the vertical profile to improve sight distance and increase the capacity of the facility. It also allowed for a high speed rail facility and dedicated high occupancy vehicle lanes to be added to the median in the future. The construction cost of the section from 50th Street to I-75 was approximately $68 million and KCA’s design cost was $1.85 million.

KCA structural engineers were responsible for the design of six bridges including two over the Tampa By-Pass Canal, two bridges for diamond interchanges at MLK Boulevard and Orient Road, and one ramp bridge near the US92/US301 interchange. The structure types included both steel and concrete bridges with one widening. The construction staging required all traffic lanes remain open at all times with no reduction in the posted speed limit. KCA structures staff designed the bridges to be built in stages so as to accommodate all traffic on the new or existing bridges. Over 10,000 linear feet of temporary and permanent retaining walls were designed.

Design of the project was initiated in 1992 and completed in 1997.
